Brian Mayne
Areas of focus: environment & waste management
Brian is a fellow of both the Royal Society of Arts and Chartered Institution of Wastes Management. He is a Chartered Environmentalist and is recognised by the International Solid Waste Association as an International Waste Manager. Brian is a visiting lecturer in Environmental Policy and Management at the School of Engineering, Cardiff University. He is also the technical lead for the Welsh Governments procurement of a treatment facility (ies) for Absorbent Hygiene Products. He was previously responsible for project direction, management, business development and technical delivery across a range of resource efficiency areas in his role as the regional director (Wales) for Ricardo Energy and Environment.
He has a background in waste strategy, policy and operational management at a senior level within local government since the 80’s. This has included managing street cleansing services, recycling, residual, trade, and bulky collections, public conveniences and the operation of Household Waste Recycling Services.
Brian has extensive experience of procurement in the UK and internationally working for both the private and public sectors. He has been the Project Director on a number of award winning multi-million-pound procurement projects from waste collections, transfer stations, MRF’s and waste transport right through to 'Design, Build, Finance and Operate' contracts for treatment facilities. He has widespread experience as a Project Director, where he has ensured the highest technical excellence when leading teams delivering a range of projects. He has continually sought regular feedback from clients on the quality of the team’s performance, technical solutions and delivery to ensure their financial targets and technical ambitions are met.
Brian is also a specialist in marketing, communications and behaviour change and has been involved in the development and delivery of a number of UK wide awareness campaigns including ‘Going for Green’, in the 90’s’ right through to establishing 'Waste Awareness Wales' for the Welsh Government. Brian is presently an active member of the CIWM Communications Special Interests Group and Vice Chair of CIWM Cymru.
He has lectured at Cardiff, Leeds and Reading Universities, in addition to publishing research on a number of waste and resource efficiency topics. Brian has delivered presentations, workshops, seminars, papers and case studies on a vast range of subjects including the circular economy, climate change and sustainable development throughout the UK. Brian was awarded a Ben Heath Certificate in 2015 (CIWM Cymru) and 2019 (CIWM London & the South East) for outstanding presentations and was voted the 31st most influential person in the resources and waste industry 2019 (#LegendsofWaste) https://resource.co/article/hot-100-2019-full-list-13125.
Brian has also developed and delivered a range of training on environmental and waste issues for the public and private sector on behalf of the CIWM, CIPFA and EUSR
