Funded by

People’s Postcode Lottery, Warm this Winter and Sustainable Wales.

People’s Postcode Trust awards grants to community projects.

Warm this Winter is a UK-wide campaign supported by leading anti-poverty and environmental organisations calling on the UK government to provide more emergency support for people struggling with energy bills this winter and a coherent plan to move the UK away from fossil fuels, through a rollout of home insulation and affordable renewables. Climate Cymru is running a sister Warm this Winter campaign in Wales.

Sustainable Wales Cymru Gynaliadwy, a progressive grassroots volunteer-run charity, seeks a low carbon future, protection of biodiversity and enthusiasm for sustainable living. Projects are developed in response to the climate and ecological emergency. Creating opportunities; bringing confidence for people and communities to join in the green and ethical agendas; advocating and supporting ‘good practice’ by citizens, producers, business and politicians. Activities include up-to-date information, democratic participation, consensus, local ownership. Sustainable Wales is a charitable incorporated organisation (registration number 1200330). (Founded in 1997, as an unincorporated charitable trust.)

Background to project

Sustainable Wales (SW), based in Porthcawl are often approached by local people, school pupils and teachers for advice and help. A number of organisations have received help and provided letters of support for this post. The local councils request our involvement at forums. SW conducted a recent snap survey of local people, including Year 12 pupils who indicated an interest in joining a local climate action group. ‘Better Porthcawl’, an emerging network of community groups, are asking us to widen interest and coordinate.

Objectives

Project Outline

Coordinator to actively encourage and support sustainable community action.

1.    Establish a young people’s climate change & nature group to organise awareness-raising campaigns, information and actions.

2.   Provide admin. support to the production company make a 6 - 7 min. film informing people of local effects and challenging politicians re: climate & nature emergencies and the cost-of-living crisis.

3.    Develop Better Porthcawl, an inclusive partnership of local groups working alongside the local authority, councillors and experts on the sustainable regeneration of Porthcawl in a constructive and positive way. The hope is to develop a co-production approach (The approach over the years by planning departments is seen as out of date, and remote from local people.)

4.    Climate Clever Conversations. Offer talks, presentations, discussions  or workshops to community groups across the County Borough.

The contractor will be managed by the SW Trustees and Advisors; guided by the Better Porthcawl founding team; and assisted by volunteers. They will be required to organise a work-plan, timetables, establish a clear local PR communication strategy and encourage groups to raise money to advance these activities. Delegation of suitable tasks to volunteers will be expected.

Throughout activities the encouragement of network and partnership development to share good practice and further support should be adopted.

b)    Undertake role playing conversations, production of campaign resources (leaflet, placards, banner, website images) whilst establishing a longer-term communication plan, empowering future active citizens. Also encourage solution-based activities and comment.

c)    Help establish roles and responsibilities and agree approaches to group coordination, administration, management, finances and fundraising.

d)    Aim for the group to show concern for future generations, be proactive and empowered young people to become active citizens for the future.

2.            Film support

Assist the production and promotion of a high-definition six to seven minute campaigning film re: Climate & Nature - local awareness of potential climate and nature threats to Bridgend borough and wider surroundings; the cost-of-living crisis and solutions.

Help film company coordinate contributors and later distribute widely via community groups, social and print media in the Bridgend area. (SW will be contracting a film production company).

The intention is to challenge politicians and government to urgently respond to the climate and ecological emergency, energy security, the cost-of-living crisis, communicate the concern of the wider public and challenge for a citizen’s assembly, as part of the ‘Warm this Winter’ mobilisation.

We would hope to include in the film the creation of a campaign stunt with the young people’s group i.e. placards or banners outside the MPs office (mentioned above).
